You're just jealous...

cause we're young and in love.

---

I was going to make a documentary similiar to "Supersize Me" except I was going to become addicted to cigarettes. Then I realized that this would entail actually smoking cigarettes and for a long enough time so that I would become addicted. The whole point was to see how hard it is to quit because I don't understand it. Anyway, I can't commit to that for several reasons, mostly because it is a stupid idea, and I would smell all the time and run slowly. Maybe in a few years.

This guy kind of rules even though he is killing himself quickly.

Everyone now knows that smoking is bad for you, but some still don't care. Oh well.

End of Days

This is the season for "out with the old, in with the new" mentality.
Take something from the past, and let it go. It does not matter now anyway.
I want to draw comics.

Zach Braff

Props to my brother for pointing this website out to me. Think Chuck Norris quotes that are actually funny.

My favorites thus far:

"But I'm alive." - Zach Braff on Friedrich Nietzsche

"I thought the dollar menu solved that?" - Zach Braff on world hunger

"I experimented in College like most kids." - Zach Braff on rape

"Sometimes, I go to Barnes & Noble with the sole intention of moving all copies of the bible to the fiction section." - Zach Braff on religion

Also, you can go to this site, and click after each quote. Thanks MS for the link.

Giving thanks

...for the Thanksgiving eve reunion at the local bar. Who will be in attendance?! More importantly, what should I wear?

I really like seeing everyone, but I can't deny the awkwardness that comes with these sorts of gatherings. It's weird seeing people that you went to high school with so many years ago. So much time has passed and most have done so much but there is usually something that still connects us.

The older I get, the more I realize that you don't have to deal with people's bullshit. In high school, it seemed like everything little thing meant something big. I loved that idea of feeling everything and being passionate about everything, but it's really all too much. I know that only a few things are really worth stressing over.

Honesty is always worth something though, that hasn't changed. If people are honest, does that mean we can always trust them? Not sure.

Anyway, I hope the little reunion is exciting and bullshit free. It'll be exciting because we are all still hopeful/fun youths. Bullshit free because we've grown up enough to realize the fault of our ways (sometimes).

8K on Thanksgiving morning in the north so keeping it sober for the night. I might be the only one.

These are good...

"you don't put a leash on a tiger" amen to that.

Come for the crack

I did half of it. 7AM start. I froze. PRed by more than 3 minutes so it wasn't a complete waste. Someone put a marathon t-shirt on the Rocky statue. HA!
Back to the books.

Thanks to a creative friend for the manifestation of my ideas into an image. He also added to it and made it even funnier. So props to him.

Sports

When I moved to Massachusetts last year, all the New England sports team did well.

I am now going to school across the river from Philadelphia, and the Phillies are doing well.

I think I'm a good luck charm, but then I remember this...

Eavesdropping

Conversation I heard today on the train from school between a recovering heroin addict (I know she was RHA because she said she was) and a pregnant woman's young son.

Son of pregnant woman who was like 4: "Where are all your teeth?"
Mother of kid: "SHHHH!"
RHA: "Oh my exboyfriend knocked them out. Don't worry we aren't together anymore. Never hit a lady."

Good advice. Although after the "poetry slam" session between you and the pregnant mom that followed the missing teeth explanation, I am sure he forgot any advice on how to be a gentleman. I love public transportation.

Oh and I am still loling about this...Thank you 236.com

River to Sea

92 miles across New Jersey. 14 legs. 7 runners. We each run two legs.

We finished 30 minutes faster than last year. Our elapsed time was 9 hours and 58 minutes and we were the 11th team to reach the sea.

I ran a 6.5 mile leg through hail and downpour. It was actually a lot of fun although I was worried cars were going to hit me. The second leg I ran was the "wildcard" leg which you can split up anyway you want with another teammate. This was 14 miles and my teammate, and I switched off every two miles for the first 12 miles and then for the last two miles, we each did one of those. It turned out we got the mileage wrong though and instead of running the last mile, I ran for like 400 meters. Haha.

Other things:
1-Our first runner on the FIRST leg almost got hit by a car. Don't ever think that old people don't have good reaction time because this old lady slammed on her breaks just as our runner wandered aimlessly into the middle of the road after his leg.

2-Someone brought one of those big drinking boot cups to the afterparty and Depends. You can gather from that it was a great afterparty. Oh and my friend tried to jump off the balcony into the pool at the party location house.

3-I woke up under a pool table. Apparently I thought it made sense to sleep under there.

Prosecutor's Office

I work for Harvey Dent...No, but someone like him. I am interning at the Prosecutor's Office in my county and today three of the interns were lucky (or unlucky) enough to see an autopsy. It wasn't a gruesome or violent death but the doctors were unsure of the actual cause. We are in the medical examiner's building and we see the "Body Refrigerator." One of the interns says, "they label like they will forget what is in there." HA!

We get in our scrubs and the Medical Examiner (ME) says, "Ok you guys can go into that room and wait for me," and he points to the room were the body is. So we all stand near the body for a few minutes while we wait for the ME. It was weird that they just left us in there with the body. Anyway, this dead woman was there in a hospital gown waiting to be opened up. The ME gives us the rundown of what happened and removes her gown and begins.

They cut the skin in the way you would imagine...the way you see it done in the movies. It's crazy how well the scalpel cuts through flesh. I felt stable at that point and was suprised at how unnerved I was about seeing a human cut open. The ME starts pulling the skin away and describing the body. Oh I forgot to mention how the tongue was pushed through the teeth. And the body was so stiff...I can't believe it was a living person yesterday.

Anway, this other dude that is assisting (not sure of his exact title) gets this tool out that is basically bolt cutters, like this...and starts chopping through the rib cages. The sound of rib cages snapping sounds like really big branches snapping. At that point the smell was getting to me. I don't know if it was chemicals or the body or both. I also underestimated how much the sight was affecting me. I sit down on a swivel chair with no arms because I feel light headed, and I feel this will remedy the situation. The next thing I remember was telling myself, "Wake up!" because I heard these voices. When I finally opened my eyes, I saw the doctor, the other dude, and the interns standing over me.

So I'm a huge baby and fainted. Fainting is sort of like half dying to me. My head smashed on the ground when I fell off the chair. I think I won't die, but I'm going to get an MRI tomorrow to make sure. Now everyone in the office nows me as "The Girl Who Fainted at the Autopsy."

Hope I'm ok because I have a race to run on Saturday. River to Sea. It made The New York Times.

Best Suicide Scenes

I watched The Last of the Mohicans today, and I was thinking about some of the "best" suicides in movies I have seen. By best I mean, suicides with the most appropriate music, camera work, and basically, those which illicit an emotional response from me. Suicides that are sudden, shocking, disturbing (aren't they all?). Which ones are your favorite?
If you have not already guessed, important parts of movies are mentioned below, so do not proceed if you don't want to know anything about the italicized titles. duh.

I thought of these so far (people like lists, right?):
1. The Last of the Mohicans: Can't seem to get the theme music or that last scene out of my head.

2. The Royal Tenenbaums (suicide attempt): "Needle in the Hay," the preparation, and the lighting...ah, see for yourself:

3. The Hours: Virginia Woolf's is decent, but Ed Harris's character's suicide is amazing.

4. Full metal jacket: Gomer Pyle can't take it no more.

5. Shawshank Redemption: (two good ones)

6. Rules of Attraction:

Art

This video kind of starts out slow so you can feel free to skip ahead. This is a fun and innovative way of making street art. These little things are called LED Throwies which is basically "a lithium battery, a 10mm diffused LED and a rare-earth magnet taped together."

Outlining is pretty cool too.

I love this projection graffiti with a laser point too. This stuff is amazing and a far cry from the usual tags or other crap I see thrown up. Not that more basic street stuff is bad, but this just takes it to a new level.
LED and projector graffiti from the dudes at graffitiresearchlab

Gotta throw in some Banksy for good measure.
Also this post is not meant to induce a discussion on the ethics of street art.

Comeback Kid

Frances Koons of Villanova was named the "Outstanding Track Athlete" at the Big East championship meet at Villanova this past weekend, winning both the 1,500 and 5,000 meters yesterday. This is all after recovering from kidney cancer that she was diagnosed with about a year ago. It's amazing she even got this type of cancer which was "result of clear-cell renal-cell carcinoma, a cancer most commonly associated with people over age 50 and with smokers."
I have seen this girl race several times, and she is tiny and tough. A great athlete. I mean, technically I guess I raced with her at Big East Track and Cross Country Championship meets, but she is way way faster than me so it doesn't really count.

The End of an Era

My buddy showed this cartoon awhile ago so thank you JD.

One more final to go, and my dreams of summer will be a reality. After four finals, I thought I would feel more of a relief since I am closer to the finish, but I just feel anxiety and anticipation when thinking about "the end." As much as it will be relaxing after finals are over, I realize that means I have to return to normal life. I'm so used to being strung out in lawschoolland that it will be strange to put together some semblance of a life without constant worry, pressure, and struggle.

I have a 5k race this Sunday after I return home which is a 9.3 on the Hillometer Chart (out of 10, and I think they made this hill scale up). Last time i ran this race, on the "Bastard" (the worst hill in the race which we have to go up twice), people were basically crawling or walking at the top. So this will be a nice ending to my first year of law school especially considering I feel out of shape.

Gearing up for the River to Sea in August, which is a 92 mile relay race across New Jersey and hopefully, if all goes well and I don't get mysteriously injured again, a marathon (Philadelphia?) in the fall.
I need to get more serious about running. I love running for the love of the sport but I also am dying for the self-satisfaction that comes along with improvement. (sort of reference to that Pre quote "You have to wonder at times what you're doing out there. Over the years, I've given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement").
So I miss being competitive and challenging myself physically and mentally. I have to quite playing around and commit.

China

'Free Tibet' flags were discovered being made at a factory in southern China. These flags are banned in mainland China so I'm sure Chinese authorities were happy to be able to crackdown on the manufacturing of these flags especially getting so close to the Olympic Games which are in 100 days.

People will find a way to protest, don't worry.
full story here
I do wonder if we can separate politics from athletics. Are the Olympic games an event that is just about athletes competing from their respective countries and not a time to make political statements and boycotts? If countries from around the world are participating in one event, isn't this the exact type of forum a country/group could use to infuse politics with sport? I feel like it can't be helped. I mean, remember the 1936 Olympics in Berlin?
Thank you to Jesse Owens putting a damper on Hitler's Olympics.
How about the 1972 Munich Games were the Israeli athletes were kidnapped and killed by Palestinians?
I think the Olympics are one of the greatest events in the world and fortunately and sometimes unfortunately, they are used as a forum for political expression. We'll see what the Olympics do for China's policy regarding Tibet. Maybe nothing. I don't even know what to say about Tibet.

Who hasn't seen this guy from Indonesia? "Because of his weak immune system, warts caused by the HPV grew into tree-like growths."
Updating on his status, he got some surgery and apparently 4 pounds of the warts have been removed.
Here he is now:

too slow.

I saw a commercial yesterday for a stove that boils water in 90SECONDS! I think Electrolux makes it, if that matters to any of you.
We are all so busy we can't wait for water to boil that we either will buy things like this magic stove or radiate the water in the microwave. At this point in my life, I actually like waiting for the water to boil.

itunes

i love having access to everyone's itunes via the library's wireless network. let the judging begin.

Spiked to the head.

This is Standford's Alicia Follmar during the first leg of the Distance Medley at the historic Penn Relays.  She got spiked in head by another runner's shoe during the start and managed to finish a "gutsy third" for her team.  We need more tough runners and people like her.

picture and article from here
Also, other recent running news, well old news at this point was the closest women's finish for the Boston Marathon ever. Dire Tune said, "I want to win Boston," before the race and she did. That type of determination is inspiring. After a close battle to the finish with Alevtina Biktimirova of Russian, Dire the 22 year old of Ethiopia won by 2 seconds.

death.

My grandfather died a couple months ago, and I find myself thinking of death more often then ever.  Not everyday or anything but enough to make me wish I believed in something more than what is on this Earth.

I also think of the perspectives of death.  For me it was really sad. But then I look to my father (it was his Dad who died) and that must have been REALLY bad. But then I look at my grandma (her husband) and I think, How do people live after death?  How do you move on?

I guess we all find a way.
